THE HISTORY
---------------------------------
Formerly called the Ellesmere canal, plans were made in 1719 to build a canal linking three rivers; The Mersey, The dee and The Severn - helping industry link to the Denbighshire coal fields.
In 1792 work started on this route ending in Cefn Mawr and Llangollen on the Wrexham - Denbighshire Border, but unfortunately, work ceased as the planned route through Denbighshire coalfield, past Wrexham and onto Chester, was deemed to expensive, and in 1801, canal engineer William Jessop, recommended abandoning the canal.
The Llangollen canal then opened in 1805 to carry slate from nearby quarries to the expanding cities of England but sadly, like other canals in the UK, the railways ended its days as a working canal, and it is nowadays popular among boaters, walkers, and serves other leisure activities.
